Michael Kofoed is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville , holding a joint appointment in the Department of Economics and the Boyd Center for Business & Economic Research within the Haslam College of Business . Previously, he served as Associate Professor of Economics and Associate Economics Program Director at the United States Military Academy at West Point . He earned his Ph.D. in Economics (2014) from the University of Georgia and a B.S. in Quantitative Economics (2009) from Weber State University. His research expertise spans the economics of education , K-12 policy , higher education finance , health economics , and applied microeconometrics . He is an IZA Research Fellow , visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia's Consumer Finance Institute , and invited researcher at J-PAL North America . His work has been published in journals such as the Journal of Public Economics , Journal of Human Resources , and Journal of Health Economics , with media coverage in the Wall Street Journal , Money Magazine , and Yahoo! Finance . Awards include the Superior Civilian Service Award and Meritorious Civilian Service Award (2023, Department of the Army), and the Swift Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship (2013, University of Georgia).
