Guy Dammann is a Researcher at Uppsala University's Department of Philosophy, specializing in Philosophy of Music and Aesthetics. He is also a prominent music and opera critic for the Times Literary Supplement (TLS) and the Guardian, with a focus on classical music and contemporary opera. His research explores the history and meaning of music criticism, particularly in relation to 18th-century French thought and the philosophical underpinnings of music's role as art. Dr. Dammann holds an MA from the University of Oxford (1994), an MMus from King's College London (1999), and a PhD (2006) from King's College London, where his doctoral thesis examined Jean-Jacques Rousseau's musical theories and moral philosophy. From 2009 to 2014, he taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. His research interests span Philosophy of Music, Aesthetics, and Opera Studies, with recent work analyzing contemporary operatic narratives and the intersection of music criticism with moral psychology. His articles, published in journals like the British Journal of Aesthetics and TLS, demonstrate expertise in both scholarly and journalistic contexts. Notable publications include investigations into Bernard Williams' music criticism and Rousseau's views on musical morality. His TLS critiques often address modern opera's challenges, such as funding in England and the tension between narrative and spectacle. He has also contributed to book chapters on Wagner, Britten, and Ensescu, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to music's cultural and philosophical dimensions.
