Byron A. Miller is an Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida, specializing in sociological approaches to health disparities. His research focuses on psychosocial factors like mastery, discrimination, and social support, particularly in the context of interracial romance and race definitions among college-aged individuals. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Florida State University with a focus on Mental Health and Social Stratification, alongside a Master’s in Teaching Secondary Social Science from the University of South Florida. Dr. Miller’s educational background includes a B.A. in Sociology from USF, an M.S. in Sociology from FSU, and a teaching certification in Social Sciences (Grades 6-12). His interdisciplinary work bridges sociology, public health, and education, addressing contemporary social issues through both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. His research interests span mental health disparities, race and ethnicity studies, and family dynamics. Recent projects examine how spousal race impacts health perceptions and the mental health outcomes of LGB individuals experiencing intimate partner violence. He has contributed to peer-reviewed journals in sociology and presented at academic conferences on topics like mindfulness in social justice contexts. Dr. Miller has received awards including the 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award from the National Society of Leadership and Success and a nomination for Miami University’s Outstanding Professor Award. He currently teaches courses such as Introduction to Sociology, Medical Sociology, and Social Sciences Seminars.
