Mauro Fosco Bertola is a musicology researcher at the Faculty of Humanities, Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, where he currently serves as project leader for the DFG-funded research project 'The Dream in contemporary European music theater: K. Saariaho, S. Sciarrino, O. Neuwirth' (2022-2025). His academic journey includes postdoctoral work at Saarland University's DFG Graduate College 'European Dream Cultures' (2017-2019), research assistant positions at Heidelberg University's Musicological Seminar (2012-2017), and lecturing experience at the same institution (2007-2012). Bertola's research focuses on the intersection of musicology, philosophy, and dream theory, with particular emphasis on contemporary European music theater. His scholarly profile bridges historical musicology with contemporary theoretical frameworks, including Žižekian philosophy. His work explores how dreams function as structural and thematic elements in contemporary opera, examining composers like Kaija Saariaho, Salvatore Sciarrino, and Olga Neuwirth through philosophical and aesthetic lenses. His publications demonstrate consistent engagement with the relationship between music, ideology, and aesthetics, particularly in 20th and 21st century contexts. Bertola has published a monograph on German-Italian musical relations (2014), co-edited volumes on dreams in the arts and Žižek's perspectives on music, and numerous scholarly articles that connect musicological analysis with philosophical inquiry. Recent work shows increasing focus on the phenomenological aspects of dream representation in contemporary opera. DFG research grant (2022-2025) as project leader DFG Graduate College postdoc position (2017-2019) Monograph: 'Die List der Vergangenheit. Musikwissenschaft, Rundfunk und Deutschlandbezug in Italien, 1890-1945' (2014) Co-editor: 'An den Rändern des Lebens. Träume vom Sterben und Geborenwerden in den Künsten' (2019) Co-editor: 'The Sound of Žižek. Musicological Perspectives on Slavoj Žižek' (2022) Bertola's academic trajectory reflects a distinctive interdisciplinary approach that connects musicological analysis with philosophical frameworks. His work on dream representations in contemporary opera demonstrates how musical structures can embody complex philosophical concepts, particularly through the lens of contemporary European composers. His research contributes to broader discussions about the role of music in representing altered states of consciousness and the boundaries between reality and imagination in artistic expression.
