Dr. Sietze Norder is an Assistant Professor at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University, specializing in biogeography and sustainability science. His research examines biodiversity patterns influenced by topography, climate, and socio-cultural factors, with a focus on islands as model systems. He holds a PhD in Island Biogeography from the University of Lisbon (2020). Research interests include biocultural diversity, human-nature relationships, and spatial analysis using GIS and agent-based modeling. He collaborates across disciplines to address global challenges like biodiversity loss and climate change. Current projects include NWO-funded studies on linguistic diversity in South America and the interplay between biophysical and social factors in cultural evolution. Teaching responsibilities include courses in Global Sustainability Science and Sustainable Development at Utrecht University. He authored the popular science book The World in Miniature and a children’s book on island ecosystems. His work emphasizes sustainability transitions and 'islands of sustainability' as models for systemic change. Key contributions include developing R packages for spatio-temporal analysis (TABS, glottospace) and global datasets on historical coastlines. He advocates for a relational 'biocultural geography' approach to move beyond anthropocentric perspectives in biodiversity studies.
