Brent Linden Fogel is a Professor-in-Residence in both Neurology and Human Genetics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He directs the UCLA Clinical Neurogenomics Research Center and the UCLA Neurogenetics Clinic, where he focuses on using genomic sequencing to identify rare and novel causes of neurological disease. Dr. Fogel also runs a specialized clinic for patients with Ataxia with Oculomotor Apraxia (AOA) and treats various disorders of balance and coordination at the UCLA Ataxia Center. His educational background includes a PHD in Microbiology & Molecular Genetics (2001) and an MD (2003) from the Medical College of Wisconsin, followed by residency in Medicine at Northwestern (2004), Neurology at UCLA Medical Center (2007), and Neurogenetics fellowship at UCLA Medical Center (2009). Dr. Fogel's research uses genomics, bioinformatics, and systems biology to understand how genetic mutations lead to neurodegenerative disorders such as spinocerebellar ataxia or neurodevelopmental conditions. His work specifically focuses on the molecular pathogenesis of ataxia with oculomotor apraxia (AOA), and he is developing gene therapy approaches to treat this disorder. His research spans gene regulation, RNA processing, and next-generation sequencing analysis. His extensive publication record shows a strong focus on cerebellar ataxias, with particular emphasis on spinocerebellar ataxia types, genetic mechanisms, and diagnostic approaches. Recent work demonstrates increasing integration of genomic and imaging techniques for precision medicine applications, along with development of bioinformatics tools for analyzing complex neurological disorders. Dr. Fogel's research has been funded by the American Academy of Neurology / American Brain Foundation, the National Institutes of Health (including R01NS082094 and K08MH086297), and the National Ataxia Foundation. His work bridges clinical neurology with cutting-edge genomic research to advance diagnosis and treatment of rare neurological disorders.
