Tamer I Sallam is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Physiology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), where he also serves as the Department Vice Chair for the Medicine Department. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiometabolic diseases, with particular emphasis on the role of non-coding RNAs and RNA modifications in atherosclerosis, lipid metabolism, and obesity.
Dr. Sallam's research interests span multiple interconnected fields in cardiovascular and metabolic biology. He investigates how long non-coding RNAs regulate cholesterol metabolism and atherosclerosis development, with recent work focusing on RNA modification (specifically N6-methyladenosine) and its role in sex-dimorphic metabolic traits. His laboratory also explores the molecular pathways connecting obesity, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease, with implications for therapeutic interventions in metabolic syndrome and related conditions. His work bridges basic molecular mechanisms with translational applications, particularly in understanding sex differences in cardiometabolic disease and developing novel therapeutic approaches.
Analysis of Dr. Sallam's publication record reveals a strong focus on the intersection of RNA biology and cardiovascular metabolism. His work demonstrates how epitranscriptomic modifications influence sex-specific metabolic regulation, how long non-coding RNAs modulate lipid homeostasis, and how these mechanisms contribute to atherosclerosis development. His research spans from fundamental molecular mechanisms to clinical implications, with particular attention to sex differences in cardiometabolic disease.
Dr. Sallam has secured significant research funding as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH grants, including R01 awards for studying RNA modification in cardiometabolic disease (R01DK127232, 2021-2026), LncRNAs in atherosclerosis (R01HL149766, 2020-2024), non-coding RNAs in adipogenesis and obesity (R01DK118086, 2018-2023), and RNA-binding proteins in atherosclerosis (R01HL139549, 2018-2023). He previously held a K08 career development award focused on long non-coding RNAs in cardiometabolic disease (K08HL128822, 2015-2021). His research is conducted within the Department of Medicine at UCLA, where he leads a laboratory investigating the molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
