Russ Carpenter is a Consultant Lecturer in the Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) program at the University of California, Davis. He holds a B.S. in Fisheries from Humboldt State University, an M.S. in Comparative Physiology from Uppsala University (Sweden), and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of South Dakota. His work bridges STEM education and neuroscience, focusing on science communication, scientific poster design, and pedagogical strategies in writing centers. Research interests span neuroscience (neuroendocrine systems, behavioral plasticity), animal behavior (social hierarchy dynamics, stress responses), and STEM teaching methodologies. His neuroscience studies often involve teleost fish models to explore CRF regulation, serotonin pathways, and environmental stress impacts. He has contributed to conceptualizing the Stress-Alternatives Model and pioneered work on the Visible Burrow System for anxiety research. Publications span over 15 years, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches in neuroscience and education. Notable contributions include a 2019 Chronicle of Higher Education article on STEM job talks and a 2019 book chapter on metacognition in curriculum design. His work often integrates behavioral neuroscience with environmental and parasitological factors affecting aquatic organisms. Affiliated with the Writing Across the Curriculum Team, Carpenter collaborates on multiliteracies initiatives and scientific communication training. His research has examined monoamine modulation in fish exposed to phytoestrogens and explored serotonin's role in sex change mechanisms in gobies.
