Johnny D. Figueroa, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Loma Linda University School of Medicine's Physiology Division. His research focuses on elucidating mechanisms connecting early-life adversities to obesity and metabolic dysregulation health disparities, with continuous NIH funding since 2020 and eight active grants. He directs the Advanced Course in Neurobiology of Stress (PHSL694) and contributes to graduate biomedical education, serving on dissertation committees for over 24 students.
Research projects span neuroinflammation, epigenetics, and neuroimaging biomarkers of stress and obesity. Current initiatives include developing community-based obesity interventions and exploring blood-based stress biomarkers. Collaborations integrate neuroscience, nutrition, and cancer research with internal/external funding.
Administrative roles include Vice-Chair for IACUC, IMSD selection committee membership, and LLU admissions team participation. Scientific service involves grant review panels for NIH/UC Davis and editorial duties at Frontiers in Neuroscience journals.
