Monica Merlin is an Assistant Professor of Art History at VCUarts Qatar. Previously, she served as Programme Leader for the MA Contemporary Arts China at Birmingham City University and taught at Christie’s Education. Her expertise lies in East Asian Art History and Visual Culture, with a focus on contemporary Chinese art, women artists, and gender studies. Education: D.Phil., University of Oxford, 2013 M.A., SOAS University of London, 2007 B.A., Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, 2004 Research interests include contemporary Chinese art and visual culture, women artists, feminism, gender, transculturality, and global Asian art. Her work explores themes such as gender representation, feminist activism, and the intersection of art with socio-political contexts. Merlin conducted post-doctoral research at the Tate Research Centre: Asia, focusing on contemporary Chinese women artists, resulting in an online archive of interviews. She contributes to curatorial projects and publishes in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes. Her research has been supported by grants, notably a post-doctoral fellowship at the Tate (2013–14). She has advised on curatorial initiatives and collaborates with institutions like the Tate and the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA). Currently, she is involved in projects examining surveillance and gender in Chinese art. Labs/Teams: Merlin’s work is associated with the Tate Research Centre: Asia and collaborations with institutions such as the Lillehammer Art Museum and Museum der Moderne, Salzburg. Her projects often involve interdisciplinary teams focused on visual culture and feminist studies.
