Pedro Rebelo is a Professor at Queen’s University Belfast, currently serving as Director of Research for the School of Creative Arts and overseeing the Sonic Arts Research Centre. Previously, he held leadership roles as Director of Education and Acting Head of School within the School of Music and Sonic Arts. His academic career includes a 2007 Visiting Professorship at Stanford University and appointments as Music Chair for major international conferences including ICMC 2008, SMC 2009, and ISMIR 2012. He completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh in 2002, conducting interdisciplinary research bridging music and architecture. His scholarly contributions appear in journals such as Organized Sound, Contemporary Music Review, and Leonardo, alongside presentations at NIME, ICMC, and ISEA conferences. Rebelo’s creative practice centers on technology-mediated sound exploration, with research interests spanning Sound Art, Computer Music, and New Media Art. His work critically engages with contemporary culture through chamber music compositions, live improvisation, and interactive installations that challenge traditional performance boundaries. His recognition includes: Northern Bank’s Building Tomorrow’s Belfast prize Internationally exhibited at venues including Melbourne Recital Hall, National Concert Hall Dublin, and Ars Electronica, his collaborations feature artists like Evan Parker and Pauline Oliveros. Recordings are released through Creative Source Recordings, documenting his piano improvisations and experimental performances. As Director of Research, he leads initiatives through the Sonic Arts Research Centre, fostering cross-disciplinary projects that integrate emerging technologies with artistic practice while shaping curriculum development across the School of Creative Arts.
