Jody Cripps is an Associate Professor of American Sign Language (ASL) in the Department of Languages at Clemson University's College of Arts and Humanities. He holds a Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching from the University of Arizona (2008), an M.A. from the same institution (2002), and a B.A. from Gallaudet University (1998). His research focuses on Universal Design, Signed Music, Signed Language Pathology, and literacy acquisition for deaf children. He co-founded two non-profit organizations and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Society for American Sign Language Journal . His work includes grant-funded projects such as a Canadian Council of Arts-supported signed musical case study ( The Black Drum ) and a Martha’s Vineyard Sign Language Revival initiative. Cripps teaches courses on ASL linguistics, deaf history, and signed language development. He collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to advance accessibility and literacy programs for deaf populations. Notable publications include studies on signed music aesthetics, emergency preparedness for signing communities, and pedagogical innovations in ASL education. His research emphasizes visual and performative arts as tools for cultural expression and community engagement.
