Gernot Kubin is a University Professor and Founding Director of the Signal Processing and Speech Communication Laboratory (SPSC) at Graz University of Technology, Austria. He has held this position since 2000 and has served in numerous leadership roles including Dean of Studies in Electrical and Audio Engineering (2004-2007), Coordinator of the Key Research Area Smart Systems for a Mobile Society (2004-2011), and Chair of the Senate (2007-2010 and 2013-now). His research focuses on nonlinear signal processing as well as speech and audio communication. Professor Kubin has co-authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications and advised more than 30 PhD students. His recent work shows a strong emphasis on conversational speech recognition, particularly for Austrian German dialects, prosody modeling, and the application of deep learning techniques to speech processing problems. His research also extends to biomedical applications of signal processing, particularly in voice analysis and vocal fatigue detection. Professor Kubin has received significant recognition for his work, most notably the 2015 Nikola Tesla medal for the highest number of patents awarded to a TU Graz scientist in a 5-year period. He has served on important committees including the IEEE Speech and Language Processing Technical Committee (2011-2016) and as General Chair for the INTERSPEECH 2019 conference held in Graz. He is also a member of the ISCA Advisory Board since 2020. His laboratory, the Signal Processing and Speech Communication Laboratory, is a leading research center in Austria with involvement in multiple national and international research projects including the Dependable Internet of Things in Adverse Environments, COMET K-Project Acoustic Sensing and Design, and the Competence Network for Digital Humanities KONDE.
