Paul Voyles is a Professor in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison , affiliated with the College of Engineering . His research focuses on the atomic-scale structure of materials, particularly amorphous solids and defects in crystalline systems. He obtained his PhD (2001), MS (1999) from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, and a BS (1996) from Oberlin College. His work spans experimental techniques like aberration-corrected Z-contrast STEM , EDS/EELS microanalysis , and coherent electron nanodiffraction .
