Philippe Gallay, PhD, is a Professor of Immunology in the Department of Immunology and Microbial Science at The Scripps Research Institute. His research focuses on the interplay between host factors and viruses, particularly HIV and HCV, aiming to develop novel antiviral therapies. He holds a PhD in Bacteriology/Immunology from the University of Lausanne (1993) and has held academic positions since 1997, including roles as Professor and Associate Professor. Key research interests include HIV latency reversal, HBV cure strategies using AAV vectors, and SARS-CoV-2 therapies targeting viral entry mechanisms. His lab has pioneered cyclophilin inhibitors (e.g., CRV431) for HCV and HIV, and developed nasal sprays to combat SARS-CoV-2 variants. Notable publications span antiviral drug combinations, viral replication mechanisms, and translational models in humanized mice. Awards: 1994 AIDS Award (Bristol-Myers Squibb), Prix Brunner Thesis Award (University of Lausanne). Grants/Labs: Collaborations on HBV cure strategies using AAV vectors, HIV latency reversal via IAP antagonists, and SARS-CoV-2 antivirals like astodrimer sodium. His work spans virology, pharmacology, and translational medicine, with a focus on high-impact human health threats like HIV, HCV, and emerging viruses.
