Katharina Maisel is an Assistant Professor in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her research focuses on mucosal drug delivery, immunoengineering, and lymphatic pathophysiology. She leads the Mucosal Associated Immune System Engineering and Lymphatics Lab, which designs in vitro models and nanotechnology-based solutions to study and treat mucosal diseases. Her work bridges bioengineering, immunology, and nanotechnology, with emphasis on understanding stromal-lymphatic interactions in disease contexts. Research interests include developing therapeutic strategies targeting the lymphatic system, in vitro platforms for disease modeling, and understanding how inflammation alters tissue properties. Her lab’s innovative approaches involve microfluidic systems and nanoparticle design to enhance drug delivery efficacy. Current projects explore mucosal immunity, vaccine development, and the role of lymphatic vessels in allergic asthma and emphysema. Recent publications highlight advancements in lymphatic transport mechanisms, hypotonic drug delivery systems, and the biomechanical roles of lymph nodes in immunity. Her team is actively engaged in promoting equitable hiring practices in academia and fostering inclusive research environments. The lab collaborates with industry and sponsors to translate fundamental discoveries into clinical applications.
