Dr. Kathryn Shine is an Associate Professor in Journalism at Curtin University and Deputy Head of the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry. She holds a faculty role in the Faculty of Humanities and is affiliated with the Office of the Provost. Her research focuses on gender equality in media, particularly women's representation in news commentary, and education journalism. Dr. Shine has transitioned from a career in journalism at outlets like The Sunday Times Magazine and The Australian to academia while maintaining freelance journalism and moderation work. Her teaching portfolio includes news and feature writing, having introduced the Journalism Major Project capstone unit. She supervises higher degree by research students and has received accolades such as the 2020 Most Prolific Media Commentator Award and 2016 Teaching Excellence Award. Dr. Shine collaborates with institutions like the ANU Global Institute for Women’s Leadership and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to advance gender equity in media participation. Her research investigates expert commentary dynamics, education news framing, and student journalism practices.
