Dr. Vasso Anagnostopoulou is a Senior Research Fellow in Medical Statistics at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), working within the Department of Primary Care & Public Health. She is actively affiliated with multiple research units including the NIHR Global Health Research Unit for Neglected Tropical Diseases, the NIHR Social Sciences for Severe Stigmatising Skin Conditions (5S) Foundation, and the Brighton & Sussex Clinical Trials Unit where she serves as statistician for the REDUCe 2 and Chelsea II trials. Her career spans both pure mathematics and applied medical statistics, reflecting a unique interdisciplinary trajectory. Dr. Anagnostopoulou's educational background demonstrates her interdisciplinary journey: BSc (Hons) and MSc in Mathematics from the University of Warwick, PhD in Mathematics (Dynamical Systems) from Queen Mary University of London, followed by postdoctoral positions at TU Dresden, Imperial College London (as a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellow), and Queen Mary University of London. In 2023, she completed an MSc in Medical Statistics from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, marking her transition to applied medical research. Her research spans two distinct but complementary domains: mathematical theory (particularly dynamical systems) and medical statistics applied to global health. She focuses on neglected tropical diseases (especially podoconiosis), with significant work in hepatology (cirrhosis management) and cardiology (thoracic aortic aneurysms). Her recent publications demonstrate a clear shift from pure mathematics to applied medical research, with an emphasis on implementation science, clinical trials methodology, and health outcomes in global health contexts. She has co-authored numerous high-impact studies in journals like BMC Medicine and PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. Dr. Anagnostopoulou actively contributes to major clinical trials and implementation research projects, particularly in Ethiopia. Her work addresses critical gaps in healthcare for neglected populations, focusing on stigma reduction, community interventions, and cost-effective care packages. As a statistician on multiple NIHR-funded projects, she plays a crucial role in designing robust studies and analyzing complex health data from diverse global settings. She serves as a joint supervisor for research projects, including 'Assessing the Health and Economic Burden of podoconiosis in Rwanda,' and is involved in mentoring the next generation of global health researchers. Her dual expertise in advanced mathematics and medical statistics positions her as a valuable collaborator who can bridge theoretical rigor with practical healthcare applications in resource-limited settings.
