Dr. Michael J. Apostolakos is a Professor of Medicine and holds leadership roles including Director of Adult Critical Care and Director of the Internal Medicine Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He also serves as Chief Medical Officer at Strong Memorial Hospital & Highland Hospital (SMH & HH), Georgia & Thomas Gosnell Professor in Quality and Safety, and Vice President of the Office of VP for Health Sciences at URMC. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and has received numerous awards for clinical excellence and teaching. Dr. Apostolakos completed his MD at SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (1987), followed by an Internal Medicine residency and Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center. His research focuses on sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and quality improvement in critical care. He has published extensively on topics like nitric oxide metabolism in sepsis, mechanical ventilation strategies, and biomarkers predicting outcomes. His work bridges clinical practice with translational research, emphasizing multimodal therapies and evidence-based guidelines. Key Awards: Arthur W. Bauman Teaching Award, multiple "Best Doctors in America" recognitions, and Rochester Business Journal Health Care Achievement Award Dr. Apostolakos has led educational initiatives, including directing the Fundamentals of Critical Care Support Course, and contributed to over 20 books chapters on critical care topics like sepsis management and weaning protocols. His leadership spans academic and clinical domains, shaping both patient care and future clinician training.
