Vivaldo Manuel Pereira Mendes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL), where he has been teaching since 1998. He is also an Affiliate Member of BRU-Iscte - Business Research Unit within the Institute of Social Sciences and Business Studies. His educational background includes a PhD in Economics from the University of Sussex (1998), a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Sussex (1991), and a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the Higher Institute of Economics and Management - UTL (1987). Mendes has held significant university leadership positions including Vice-Rector (2005-2009), President of the General Assembly (2002-2005), and Director of the Department of Economics (2010-2014). He has taught diverse courses spanning macroeconomics, microeconomics, game theory, monetary economics, and computational economics. His research portfolio demonstrates a clear evolution from theoretical macroeconomics and monetary policy toward computational economics and machine learning applications. Recent publications (2019-2024) show a strong focus on applying deep learning techniques to financial forecasting, particularly examining how data frequency impacts prediction accuracy across global markets. Mendes has published in high-impact journals including Physica A (Q1), European Physical Journal B (Q1), and Economics Bulletin (Q2), with his 2005 paper on controlling chaotic dynamics in economic models receiving 23 Google Scholar citations. He has also contributed to book chapters on spatial econometrics and optimal monetary policy. A committed advocate of open-source software, Mendes actively contributes to the Julia programming language community and maintains a personal website showcasing his academic work and computational projects.
