Jay Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health within the College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. He directs the Occupational Ergonomics and Biomechanics Laboratory and maintains strong connections with industry partners to address real-world occupational safety challenges across multiple high-risk sectors including transportation, construction, mining, agriculture, forestry, and commercial fishing. Dr. Kim received his MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his PhD in Ergonomics and Biomechanics from the University of Washington. Prior to joining Oregon State University's faculty in 2015, he served as an assistant professor at Northern Illinois University for two years and worked as a research scientist at the University of Washington, establishing a foundation for his research in workplace biomechanics and injury prevention. His research program focuses on developing and evaluating evidence-based interventions to reduce physical exposures that lead to occupational injuries and illnesses. He investigates how whole-body vibration affects workers' health in transportation and mining industries, how exoskeletons can reduce biomechanical risks in forestry and mining operations, and how virtual and augmented reality interactions impact musculoskeletal loading in neck and shoulder regions. His work combines sophisticated laboratory experiments using the Six Degree-of-Freedom motion platform with field studies to ensure practical applicability of findings in real-world settings. Analysis of Dr. Kim's publication record reveals a strategic progression from fundamental biomechanics research to applied interventions in high-risk industries, with increasing emphasis on worker-centered design approaches and practical implementation of ergonomic solutions. His work demonstrates consistent innovation in measurement techniques and intervention development across diverse occupational settings. Dr. Kim serves as Principal Investigator for six externally-funded research projects addressing critical safety issues in commercial fishing, timber operations, mining, and virtual reality applications. These projects focus on developing practical interventions to reduce musculoskeletal injuries across various high-risk industries, with several resulting in direct workplace modifications that have been adopted by industry partners. At Oregon State University, Dr. Kim directs the Occupational Ergonomics and Biomechanics Laboratory, which features a state-of-the-art Six Degree-of-Freedom motion platform capable of simulating real-world vibration exposures encountered by vehicle operators in mining, construction, and transportation industries. His lab collaborates extensively with industry partners, regulatory agencies, and worker organizations to develop and test practical ergonomic solutions that can be readily implemented in workplace settings, bridging the gap between academic research and real-world application.
