Donald Darensbourg is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Texas A&M University's College of Science. His research group focuses on catalysis, sustainable polymer synthesis, and CO2 utilization, with emphasis on converting CO2 and epoxides into biodegradable polycarbonates. He holds a B.S. from California State University, Los Angeles (1964) and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1968). Darensbourg's research explores fundamental mechanisms in CO2/epoxide copolymerization, development of biocompatible catalysts (e.g., zinc, calcium), and synthesis of functional polymers for biomedical applications. His work integrates experimental and computational approaches to advance green chemistry and sustainable materials. Recent publications focus on CO2-derived triblock copolymers, micellar catalysis, and biomass-based monomers. His scientific awards include the SEC Faculty Achievement Award (2023), election to the National Academy of Sciences (2022), and the American Chemical Society Award in Inorganic Chemistry (2010). He mentors a large cohort of students and postdocs, with over 50 Ph.D. advisees contributing to academia and industry. The Darensbourg Research Group utilizes advanced spectroscopic techniques and collaborates globally to pioneer eco-friendly polymer technologies.
