Inger Odnevall

Inger Odnevall is a Professor at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), affiliated with the Division of Surface and Corrosion Science within the School of Engineering Sciences. Her research focuses on corrosion science, environmental impact of materials, and nanotoxicology, with a particular emphasis on understanding surface reactivity and metal dispersion from materials used in construction, consumer products, and biomedical applications. She leads the Odnevall group, which collaborates with industry and international organizations like the European Union’s REACH framework to address environmental and health risks.

Key research areas include atmospheric corrosion mechanisms, nanoparticle toxicity, and the environmental fate of metals. She has pioneered studies on the antibacterial properties of copper surfaces and the diffuse dispersion of metals from outdoor materials. Her work bridges fundamental science and industrial applications, contributing to sustainable materials design and risk assessment.

Odnevall teaches courses such as Corrosion and Surface Protection (KD2380) and supervises projects in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. She has published extensively, with over 200 peer-reviewed articles focused on corrosion, nanomaterials, and environmental chemistry. Her research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining electrochemistry, surface analysis, and toxicology.

Current projects include investigating additive manufacturing materials’ safety, MXene nanomaterials, and the health impacts of welding fumes. Collaborations span universities like Karolinska Institutet and industries, ensuring practical application of scientific findings.
