Beth Williams serves as Associate Dean of the Robert Crown Law Library and Senior Lecturer in Law at Stanford Law School. She joined Stanford in 2015 after holding significant positions at Louisiana State University's Paul M. Hebert Law Center and Columbia University's Arthur W. Diamond Law Library. Williams earned her J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law, M.L.I.S. from the University of Washington, and M.A. in philosophy from Marquette University. Before transitioning to law librarianship, she practiced public interest law in Maine where she maintains admission to practice. Her research focuses on the intersection of access to information and access to justice, digitization and preservation, and open access publishing as they apply to libraries and legal information management. She teaches courses in legal research, foreign and international legal research, knowledge management, and ethics. Williams' publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly engagement with initiative and referendum law, particularly through state-specific research guides that examine direct democracy mechanisms across different jurisdictions. Her work bridges practical legal research methodology with theoretical considerations of citizen legislation. As Associate Dean of the Robert Crown Law Library, Williams leads one of the most comprehensive legal research collections in the country, overseeing both traditional and digital legal information resources that support Stanford Law School's academic mission.
