Dr. Maja Mihelja Žaja is Associate Professor in the Department of Finance at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb , a position she has held since 2021. Since joining the faculty in 2006, she has also served as head of the specialist postgraduate programme Insurance and Reinsurance and teaches extensively across undergraduate, graduate and specialist levels. Additionally, she is an external lecturer at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing and the Faculty of Law in Zagreb. Education PhD in Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb – 2013 Specialist Postgraduate Programme in Insurance and Reinsurance, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb – 2010 Research Focus Dr. Žaja’s research portfolio lies at the intersection of public finance , insurance economics and risk management . Core themes include the design and impact of tax policy , the fiscal sustainability of public systems (especially healthcare), the efficiency of insurance markets under Solvency II, and the growing role of green bonds and digital payment innovations in financial stability. Scientific Recognition Dr. Pero Jurković Award 2018 – for outstanding contribution to finance research. Croatian Insurance Bureau Award – for best scientific paper in the field of insurance. Teaching & Mentoring She is course leader for Insurance and Risks , Public Finance , Payment Systems , Croatian Tax System and Public Debt Management . Her mentees have received both the Dean’s Award and the Croatian Insurance Office Award for outstanding final theses. Leadership & Service Beyond research, Dr. Žaja currently heads the postgraduate specialist study Insurance and Reinsurance and has served as session chair or presenter at numerous domestic and international conferences, reinforcing the Faculty’s reputation in applied finance and insurance studies.
