Dr. Martyn Smith serves as Senior Lecturer in Japanese Studies within the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield's School of Languages, Arts and Societies. He joined the institution in 2019 after holding academic positions at Newcastle University, Birkbeck, Winchester University, SOAS, and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (where he was Visiting Assistant Professor in 2018). His educational background includes BA and MA degrees in European Studies and French, followed by a PhD from SOAS (University of London) completed in 2014. After initial teaching experience in France, he spent seven years living in Japan's Kanto region working as an English language teacher before transitioning to academia. BA in European Studies and French MA in European Studies and French PhD from School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London (2014) Smith's research centers on interdisciplinary sound studies within Asian contexts, examining how sound perception shapes gender, racial, and national identities through colonial and post-colonial experiences. His work decenters Western perspectives to analyze modernity in Asia through sound culture. Additional long-standing interests include Japanese nationalism, gender construction in media, and consumer society development in postwar Japan. His publication trends reveal a clear evolution from early focus on media and consumerism in Cold War Japan toward contemporary sound studies. The 2022-2023 period shows concentrated output on Asian sound cultures, particularly examining recording technology, aurality, and mobility within postwar contexts. Earlier work (2016-2018) established foundations in gendered consumerism through analyses of men's magazines like Heibon Punch. Smith co-founded the multi-year Asian Sound Culture Studies and Modernity Project with colleagues in Tokyo and the British Library. This collaborative initiative has produced significant outputs including the 2022 edited volume Asian Sound Cultures . His teaching portfolio includes core modules on East Asian studies, Japanese history, and gender identities. Current courses include EAS1000 (Exploring East Asia), EAS1032 (Understanding Japan 2), and EAS21008 (Gender and Identities in East Asia).
