Stephen Gray is an Associate Professor of Urban Design and Director of the Master of Architecture in Urban Design Program at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (GSD). He also co-directs the Master of Landscape Architecture in Urban Design program. His work focuses on the intersection of social justice, resilience, and urban design, emphasizing equity in spatial development and community engagement. Gray holds a B.Arch from the University of Cincinnati and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design (MAUD) from Harvard, where he received awards for thesis and leadership. He co-founded the Grayscale Collaborative, an urban design firm prioritizing inclusive processes. Education: B.Arch (University of Cincinnati, 2003); MAUD (Harvard University, 2008, with distinction). Research Interests : Gray’s research addresses systemic racism in urban development, resilience planning in marginalized communities, and equitable infrastructure reuse. Notable projects include the High Line Network’s equity framework, the Global Design Initiative for Refugee Children, and collaborations with the World Bank on Metro Manila’s resilience strategies. His work emphasizes participatory design to empower underrepresented communities. Awards & Recognition : 2015 and 2020 AIA Awards for collaborative achievements in advancing equity and community-driven urban design. He has served on committees such as the Presidential Committee on Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery and Boston’s Resilient Boston initiative. Labs & Affiliations : Director of the Grayscale Collaborative; co-leader of the Equitable Impacts Framework pilot with the High Line Network; affiliated with the Harvard Mellon Urban Initiative and the Global Design Initiative for Refugee Children.
