Robert C. Liebermann is a Research Professor at Stony Brook University's Mineral Physics Institute, holding the position since 2014. Previously, he served as Distinguished Service Professor from 1996 to 2014 and as a faculty member from 1976 to 2014. His research focuses on mineral physics, particularly the behavior of minerals under high pressure and temperature conditions, with contributions to understanding Earth's interior dynamics. He co-developed groundbreaking high-pressure facilities like the Stony Brook High-Pressure Laboratory, featuring SAM 95 and USSA-2000 apparatuses, which were pivotal in mineral physics research. His work includes studies on phase transitions in minerals, elastic wave velocity measurements, and collaborations across institutions globally. Education: B.S. from California Institute of Technology (1964), Ph.D. from Columbia University (1969). He held a Senior Research Fellowship at Australian National University (1970–76) and served as President of COMPRES (2003–2010). Key awards include the Edward A. Flinn Award (2012) and an honorary doctorate from Université Paul Sabatier (2004). The mineral 'liebermannite' was named in his honor in 2014. Research highlights include advancing ultrasonic interferometry techniques, studying olivine-perovskite transformations, and investigating diffusion mechanisms in minerals. He has collaborated with international teams, including those in France, Japan, and Australia, and his work has been published in top journals like Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors and American Mineralogist.
