Ida Westermann

Ida Westermann is a Professor and Head of the Department of Materials Technology at NTNU's Faculty of Natural Sciences. Her research focuses on metallic materials' deformation mechanisms, microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties, particularly in aluminum and steel alloys. She leads the Physical Metallurgy research group and collaborates with institutes like SFI PhysMet and SFI CASA.

Research Interests:
- Interaction between deformation/temperature and material properties
- Multi-material composites (steel-aluminum interfaces, additive manufacturing)
- In-situ testing techniques (SEM/DIC, X-ray tomography)
- Intermetallic phase formation in bonded materials

Recent work highlights novel methods for aluminum-reinforced concrete and advanced microstructure analysis of super duplex steels. She teaches courses including Materials Science fundamentals, applied electron microscopy, and metallic materials' mechanical properties.
