Katja Hanewald is an Associate Professor in the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies at the UNSW Business School , University of New South Wales. She serves as a Vice President of the Asia-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association (APRIA) and co-edits the North American Actuarial Journal . Her research focuses on longevity, healthy ageing trends, and insurance strategies for ageing populations, with a particular emphasis on actuarial science, health economics, and mortality modelling. Her work spans topics such as reverse mortgages, long-term care financing, housing wealth utilization, and the interplay between social factors and health outcomes. She has published extensively in leading journals across actuarial science, economics, and public health. Key themes include the design of retirement income products, risk analysis for financial instruments, and policy evaluations for aged care systems. In addition to her academic contributions, Hanewald collaborates on global health initiatives, examining intrinsic capacity trajectories and dementia risk factors across diverse populations. Her research bridges theoretical actuarial models with practical applications in policy and financial planning.
