Gordon Hanson is the Peter Wertheim Professor in Urban Policy and Academic Dean for Strategy and Engagement at Harvard Kennedy School (HKS). He specializes in the labor market consequences of globalization, particularly the China trade shock, and leads the Reimagining the Economy project with Dani Rodrik. His research addresses regional job loss, place-based policies, and energy transition impacts on labor markets. Education: PhD in Economics from MIT (1992), BA in Economics from Occidental College (1986). Prior roles include UC San Diego’s Pacific Economic Cooperation Chair and founding director of the Center on Global Transformation. He also served on faculties at the University of Michigan and University of Texas. Research Interests: Globalization effects, regional economic policy, immigration, economic geography, and the energy transition. He has published in top journals like the Journal of Economic Perspectives and is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Affiliations: Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, past co-editor of major economics journals, and co-director of HKS’s Reimagining the Economy initiative. His work frequently appears in media like Foreign Affairs and the Wall Street Journal.
