Panayiotis Economides is an Associate Professor of Endocrinology at the School of Medicine, European University of Cyprus. He previously held academic positions at Harvard Medical School and clinical roles at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston. He founded the Economides Nicosia Endocrinology Center in Cyprus, serving as its Director from 2003 to 2019. Education includes an M.D. from the University of Athens, followed by residency and clinical fellowships in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at Tufts University and Harvard Medical School. He earned a PhD in Medicine from the University of Athens (2009). His research focuses on thyroid disorders, diabetes, and vascular function. Key interests include thyroid nodule malignancy risk factors, obesity-related endocrine pathologies, and endothelial dysfunction in diabetes. He has led studies on air pollution’s impact on diabetic vascular health and pioneered thyroid ultrasound techniques combined with thyroglobulin assays for surgical guidance. Notable awards include the Mary K. Iacocca Fellowship (2002-2003) and recognition as a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (2008). He has contributed to over 30 peer-reviewed articles and serves on editorial boards for endocrinology journals. His work spans clinical research, academic teaching, and leadership in professional societies such as the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the European Thyroid Association. Current projects investigate thyroid carcinoma prevalence and obesity’s role in thyroid malignancies in Cyprus.
