Ramesh Balasubramaniam is a Professor of Cognitive & Information Sciences at the University of California, Merced. During the 2022-23 academic year, he was affiliated with the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University. His primary research focuses on sensorimotor neuroscience, particularly the interplay between the motor system and music perception/cognition. The Sensorimotor Neuroscience Laboratory, led by Dr. Balasubramaniam, employs advanced techniques such as 3-D motion capture, EEG, TMS, eye tracking, and robotic exoskeletons to investigate embodied cognition and human action control. Research emphases include rhythm processing, synchronization to external stimuli, and dynamical systems approaches to understanding brain-behavior relationships. The lab's work is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the University of California President’s Office, and the Blum Center.
