Dr. Bishawjit Mallick is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University, specializing in Human Geography and Spatial Planning. His research focuses on environmental non-migration, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development. He holds a PhD from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and a Master’s from the University of Karlsruhe. He has secured over €2 million in research funding, including an EU Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship. His work emphasizes the social and environmental drivers of migration/non-migration decisions, particularly in hazard-prone regions like the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta. Key research areas include intergenerational environmental non-migration, climate adaptation cultures, and South-North-South cooperation for sustainable development. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed papers in journals like Environment Research Letters , Ambio , and Ecological Economics . Current projects include BEAT THE HEAT (heat stress adaptation) and HoMe (historical grounding of migration decisions). Mallick advises multiple PhD students on topics ranging from gendered mobility to climate resilience in Bangladesh and China. He has received awards such as the Emerald Literati Excellence Award (2012) and the Brown University Climate Change Award (2011). His research bridges socio-spatial approaches with mixed-methods, emphasizing policy-relevant insights for vulnerable communities.
