Harriet Wallberg is a Professor of Physiology at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Karolinska Institutet. She served as President (Vice-Chancellor) of Karolinska Institutet from 2004–2012 and held leadership roles such as Secretary General of the Swedish Research Council’s Scientific Council for Medicine (2001–2003) and University Chancellor of the Swedish Higher Education Authority (2014–2016). She is a member of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet and has contributed to international advisory roles, including the International Scientific Advisory Council to Singapore and Denmark. Her research focuses on diabetes, particularly insulin resistance and the role of exercise in glucose metabolism. She co-authored the book "Koll på diabetes typ 2" , a practical guide for individuals with type 2 diabetes. Key contributions include discovering insulin-independent glucose transport in muscles via muscle contraction, a foundational insight for diabetes treatment. She has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Order of the Rising Sun and the King’s Medal. Current research explores molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance, effects of exercise timing on blood glucose control, and the impact of high-intensity training in type 2 diabetes management. Her work bridges clinical practice, education, and policy, emphasizing both scientific rigor and patient empowerment.
