Gian Luca Marcialis is an Associate Professor at the University of Cagliari, leading the Biometric Unit of the Pattern Recognition and Applications Laboratory (PRA Lab) within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Cagliari (2000 and 2004). His research focuses on biometric security, including fingerprint presentation attack detection, facial deepfake detection, and crowd anomaly analysis. Key areas include multimodal biometric systems, liveness detection in authentication, and the ethical implications of AI in forensics. Marzialis has contributed to initiatives like the LivDet competitions and BullyBuster project against cyberbullying. His work integrates machine learning with real-world applications in surveillance, healthcare, and public safety, emphasizing both technical innovation and societal impact.
