Dr. Magdalena Ietswaart is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Stirling, Scotland. She holds a PhD in Neuropsychology of Action and has held academic roles at institutions including Aberdeen, Durham, and Northumbria Universities before joining Stirling in 2013. Her research focuses on neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience, particularly the neural mechanisms underlying action representation and its clinical applications. She leads the Stirling Brains research group, employing advanced techniques like 7T MRI, EEG, and kinematic analysis to study real-world brain function in neurological patients and athletes. Her work includes investigating brain changes from sport-related head impacts (e.g., football heading) and Parkinson's disease motor control. She has secured grants from the National Institute for Health Research, Medical Research Scotland, and the Scottish Government. Projects emphasize multi-method approaches, such as integrating mobile neuroimaging with behavioral measurements. Dr. Ietswaart supervises numerous PhD students in areas like sport brain health, apraxia, and real-world cognition. Collaborations span institutions globally, including Germany, Italy, and Belgium. Key areas of research include: Neural correlates of action observation and execution Cognitive neuroscience of movement disorders Biofluid markers in traumatic brain injury Development of neuroimaging biomarkers for mild traumatic brain injury Her recent studies highlight acute neurological effects of routine sports activities (e.g., boxing, soccer) and the application of mobile EEG to assess real-world cognitive processes. She advocates for interdisciplinary research to address societal challenges like dementia prevention and athlete brain safety.
