Paul D. Gamlin

Paul D. Gamlin is a Professor and White-McKee Endowed Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), serving as Director of Basic and Translational Research. He holds secondary appointments as Professor of Neurobiology, Psychology, and Biomedical Engineering, alongside Senior Scientist roles at the Vision Science Research Center, School of Medicine Center for Aging, and Civitan International Research Center.

His research spans neural pathways for coordinated eye movements (vergence, accommodation, pupillary responses), non-image forming retinal mechanisms involving intrinsically-photosensitive ganglion cells, and ocular gene therapy for photoreceptor loss. He investigates dysfunctions underlying amblyopia and strabismus while exploring links between visual pathways and sleep, migraine, and mood disorders using electrophysiological, behavioral, fMRI, and neuroanatomical methods.

Dr. Gamlin serves as Chair of the NIH Mechanisms of Sensory, Perceptual, and Cognitive Processes (SPC) Study Section and on ARVO's Program Planning Committee. His research has been continuously funded by the National Eye Institute since 1989, with additional support from the National Science Foundation, Foundation Fighting Blindness, EyeSight Foundation of Alabama, and Research to Prevent Blindness.

He previously directed the UAB Vision Science Research Center and Neuroscience Graduate Program, and chaired the UAB Department of Vision Sciences. His laboratory integrates multidisciplinary approaches to study primate visual systems and develop gene-based treatments for blindness, leveraging UAB's research infrastructure across vision science and aging centers.
