Carmen Mannella is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, specializing in mitochondrial structure and bioenergetics. His research focuses on membrane permeability, topology, and the development of advanced electron microscopy tools to study mitochondrial dynamics. Education: BS in Physics (1969) from Canisius College; PhD in Biophysics (1974) from the University of Pennsylvania; Postdoctoral training in Molecular Biology at St. Louis University School of Medicine (1976-1978). Dr. Mannella pioneered electron tomography for cellular imaging and discovered mitochondrial cristae junctions and ER-mitochondria tethers. His work on VDAC channels and membrane remodeling has reshaped understanding of mitochondrial function in health and disease. Recent research trends include computational modeling of crista morphology, cryo-EM analysis of membrane dynamics, and the role of mitochondrial ultrastructure in pathological states.
