Kate Newby is the Faculty Academic Support Lead for Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Sunderland, where she oversees initiatives to enhance student success and retention. She is also Chair of the University's Women's Network and a Senior Fellow of Advance HE. Her work focuses on inclusive educational strategies, authentic assessment, and accessibility for students with disabilities. She holds a nursing background, including registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and has led projects such as the Health Education England-funded 'Barriers to success in nursing' and the Vice Chancellor's Teaching Fellowship project 'Bridging the divide: empowering marginalised student voices through reverse mentoring'. Her research explores reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities and innovative assessment strategies. She teaches on the MEd programme and lectures in research methods, inclusive pedagogies, and clinical skills for practice. Awards include the 2018 Nursing Times Award for Nurse Education Provider of the Year (Post-Registration). Her roles also involve supervising undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations, and she collaborates with Student Journey on strategies to increase student engagement with resources like Studiosity.
