Dr Stuart Campbell is a Lecturer and Academic Lead for Volatile Metabolomics at the University of Sheffield’s School of Biosciences. He holds a PhD in Entomology from Cornell University (2012), followed by postdoctoral roles as a Banting Fellow at the University of Toronto (2013-2016) and an Independent Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield (2017-2019). Currently a NERC Independent Research Fellow (2019-present), he leads research on plant-insect interactions, focusing on volatile metabolomics and ecological adaptations. His research investigates how species interactions drive evolutionary change, using multi-omics approaches to study plant defenses, pollinator behavior, and herbivore adaptations. Key projects include work on nightshade plants (Solanaceae), bumblebees, hawkmoths, and Arabidopsis. He collaborates on agricultural applications, such as maize virus research in Uganda and urban allotment insect diversity in the UK. Teaching responsibilities include courses on Animal Diversity (APS 272), Insect Biology (APS 229), and Biological Field Research (APS 356). He advises multiple PhD and MRes students, including Emilie Ellis (Grantham Scholar), Upuli Wickramaarachchi, and Abigail Barton. Professional roles include membership in the NERC Peer Review College and the APS Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee. His lab website provides further details on research projects and opportunities.
