Dr. Siby Samuel is an Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo's Department of Systems Design Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering. He directs the User Performance Lab (UPL), focusing on human factors in transportation and healthcare safety. His research addresses crash causation, driver behavior, autonomous vehicles, and cognitive training interventions for vulnerable populations such as older drivers and those with ADHD. He holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from National Institute of Technology Karnataka, India. Research Interests: His work spans simulation & VR applications, predictive modeling of driver behavior, healthcare human factors, and human-centered AI. He examines attention, cognition, and decision-making in complex systems like autonomous vehicles and medical settings. Key areas include caregiver error reduction, traffic control device design, and assistive automotive interfaces. Teaching: Recent courses include SYDE 542 (Interface Design), SYDE 642 (Cognitive Engineering Methods), and SYDE 411 (Optimization). He has contributed to Transportation Research Board committees and peer-reviewed journals in human factors and transportation safety. His research emphasizes translating findings into practical solutions for infrastructure and interface design improvements. Labs/Teams: The User Performance Lab (UPL) develops innovative approaches to measure human performance in transportation and healthcare contexts. Current projects include VR-based rehabilitation tools, cognitive training for older drivers, and evaluating automated vehicle systems' safety implications.
