Associate Professor Michael Fitzharris is affiliated with Monash University's Accident Research Centre (MUARC), where he serves as Associate Director of Regulation and In-depth Crash Investigations. He holds an honorary position at the National Trauma Research Institute. With a PhD in psychology focusing on mental health consequences of road crashes, his work spans pre-, during, and post-crash phases to improve safety and health outcomes. He has extensive international experience, including leading MUARC South Africa (2008-2010) and contributing to global road safety initiatives with WHO and the Make Roads Safe campaign.
His research focuses on drug/drinking driving, mental health leadership, injury causation, and road safety in low-resource countries. He has led 32 projects including the Enhanced Crash Investigation Study (ECIS), examining crash factors and countermeasures. He has published over 200 outputs and won 6 awards, including Excellence in Research (2011) and Research Impact (2014).
Michael actively participates in policy development through submissions to government committees and has been a keynote speaker at road safety workshops. His recent work evaluates driver monitoring systems, therapeutic justice for drug-driving, and pedestrian safety innovations.
