Andrew S. Belmont is a Professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. He holds the endowed title of Lincoln Professorial Scholar. Belmont completed an A.B. in Physics at Princeton University, followed by an M.D./Ph.D. in Biophysics at Temple University, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California-San Francisco. His research focuses on chromatin structure, gene expression regulation, and nuclear architecture. Key interests include understanding how chromatin fibers fold into chromosomes, the dynamics of interphase chromosome positioning, and their functional implications for transcription and replication. Belmont pioneered methods like TSA-seq and CRISPR-based tagging to study chromosomal loci dynamics. Recent work explores nuclear speckles' role in gene expression regulation and genome organization.
