Janaka Balasooriya is an Associate Teaching Professor at Arizona State University's School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence. He has been affiliated with ASU since 2007 and previously served as a postdoctoral fellow at Missouri University of Science and Technology. Balasooriya brings industry experience as a Software Engineer to his academic role, focusing on teaching and research in distributed computing, software engineering, and cloud computing. His research emphasizes distributed architectures for cloud and service-oriented systems, particularly in workflow coordination and software testing methodologies. He has contributed to middleware solutions for enhancing web services infrastructure and has published extensively on topics like SyD middleware, mobile applications, and bioinformatics systems. Balasooriya's teaching spans courses in software engineering, distributed systems, and programming fundamentals, including CSE 310 (Data Structures), CSE 464 (Software QA and Testing), and CSE 445 (Distributed Software Development). He actively coordinates courses like CSE 240 and mentors undergraduate students through honors thesis and practicum programs. His service contributions include roles as an IEEE reviewer, ABET committee member, and tournament judge for FIRST Lego League. Balasooriya's work integrates academic research with practical industry challenges, fostering innovation in collaborative computing environments.
