Dr. Michael Gutland is a Lecturer in Environmental Performance of Historic Buildings at University College London (UCL), affiliated with The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment and the Bartlett School of Environment, Energy & Resources. With a background in carpentry and construction, he holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from Carleton University and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Victoria. His work focuses on balancing heritage preservation with sustainability challenges like climate adaptation, energy efficiency, and structural safety in historic buildings. Education: PhD in Civil Engineering, Carleton University Undergraduate Degree in Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Engineering, Carleton University Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Victoria (Rebuild Initiative) Research Interests: Hygrothermal risks in building envelope interventions, socioeconomic barriers to retrofitting, data-driven tools for retrofit decision-making, and deep retrofits of heritage structures. His work emphasizes practical solutions that preserve heritage values while addressing modern demands such as energy reduction and climate resilience. Teaching and Engagement: Develops curricula on heritage engineering and sustainable retrofits, including a special topics course at the University of Victoria and contributions to UCL’s Sustainable Built Environments, Energy and Resources (SBEER) program. Active in initiatives like the Association of Preservation Technology’s Student Design-Build Competition. Key Projects: Rehabilitation of Ottawa’s Parliament Buildings, analysis of retrofit adoption barriers using machine learning, and collaborations with industry partners to improve retrofit guidance for building owners.
