Davide Lazzati is a Professor and Department Head of the Department of Physics at Oregon State University within the College of Science . His research focuses on theoretical and computational astrophysics, particularly Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), cosmic dust dynamics, and relativistic jet phenomena. Education: Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Milan Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Milan Research Interests : Lazzati explores the physics of GRBs, including their prompt emission mechanisms, afterglow observations, and connections to neutron star mergers. His group investigates cosmic dust formation in supernovae and its resistance to sputtering, as well as granular dynamics in self-gravitating systems. He employs numerical simulations and multi-messenger approaches to bridge theory and observations. Key Achievements : In 2022, he won the Aspen Institute Italia Prize for his transformative work in astrophysics. His group's prediction of off-axis GRB emission was confirmed by the 2017 GW170817/GRB170817A discovery. Notable collaborations include projects with Prof. Alessandra Corsi (Texas Tech University) on compact binary mergers and studies funded by NSF and NASA grants. Current Activities : Lazzati oversees the Lazzati Theoretical and Computational Astrophysics Group , which actively pursues funding (e.g., NSF AAG, NASA APRA grants) and hosts postdoctoral researchers. He teaches advanced courses like Graduate Mathematical Physics (PH 562) and mentors students through graduate, undergraduate, and postdoctoral programs.
