Stein Joar Hegland is a Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL). He serves as head of the research group 'Landscape, Ecology and Climate', teaching in the Master's programme in Climate Change Management and the Bachelor's programme in Landscape Planning with Landscape Architecture. His courses include 'Climate Change Ecology' (M.Sc.), 'Landscape Ecology' (B.Sc.), and 'Ecology' (B.Sc.). His research focuses on field ecology with specialization in: Land-use change effects on plants and animals Pollination ecology and plant-pollinator networks Climate change impacts on species interactions Herbivore ecology (deer/insect-plant dynamics) Wildlife management and human-wildlife conflict resolution Primary study organisms include bilberry ( Vaccinium myrtillus ), bumblebees, and red deer, with work centered in boreal ecosystems. Recent publications (2020-2025) demonstrate consistent focus on climate change impacts, plant-herbivore-pollinator interactions, and boreal forest dynamics. Key themes include experimental warming effects on dwarf shrubs, elevational gradients in plant defenses, spatial modeling of pollinator networks, and ungulate-vegetation relationships. Over 75% of recent works explicitly address climate change mechanisms. He leads the 'Landscape, Ecology and Climate' research group at HVL, coordinating investigations into ecological responses to environmental change. No awards, grants, or student advisees are documented in available sources.
