Anil Markandya is a distinguished Professor and Ikerbasque Distinguished Professor at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), part of the University of the Basque Country. He specializes in environmental economics and climate change, leading the 'Adaptation Lab' research line. His work integrates multidisciplinary approaches to address climate challenges, emphasizing sustainable development, environmental valuation, and policy design. Markandya holds a PhD in Environmental Economics from the London School of Economics (1975) and has held academic positions at institutions including Princeton University, Harvard University, and University College London. He served as BC3’s Executive Director since 2008 and contributed to the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report , which won the Nobel Peace Prize (2007) . His research spans climate policy, energy systems, and biodiversity economics, with over 300 publications. Key research interests include: Climate change adaptation strategies Cost-benefit analysis of environmental policies Green accounting frameworks International climate finance mechanisms Interactions between SDGs and climate targets He has advised global institutions like the World Bank, EU, and governments of India and the UK on energy, environment, and development. Awards include recognition as one of the 50 Most Influential Sustainability Thinkers (2008) and leadership roles in the European Association of Environmental & Resource Economists (EAERE). Recent work focuses on mobilizing finance for biodiversity, climate resilience in cities, and quantifying health co-benefits of mitigation policies. His interdisciplinary approach bridges economics, ecology, and policy to advance climate solutions.
