Peter C. Hollenhorst is a Professor of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Pharmacology at Indiana University School of Medicine - Bloomington. He leads the Hollenhorst Lab, which focuses on transcription factor function and its role in cancer development and progression. His research spans molecular biology, cancer genetics, and signal transduction pathways with a particular emphasis on ETS family transcription factors. Dr. Hollenhorst received his B.S. from St. Norbert College and his Ph.D. in Biomolecular Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the mentorship of Dr. Catherine Fox. He completed his postdoctoral training as an American Cancer Society fellow at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah, working in Dr. Barbara Graves' laboratory on genomic targets of ETS family transcription factors. His research primarily investigates transcription factor specificity, particularly focusing on ETS family proteins like ERG and their roles in prostate cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and ovarian cancer. The lab examines how oncogenic transcription factors interact with signaling pathways including Ras/ERK and PI3K/AKT, how chromosomal rearrangements create cancer-driving transcription factors, and mechanisms of therapy resistance. Recent work has identified potential therapeutic targets in translocation renal cell carcinoma and mechanisms of docetaxel resistance in prostate cancer. Dr. Hollenhorst was promoted to Professor in 2022 after joining Indiana University School of Medicine - Bloomington in 2010. His publication record shows consistent productivity with significant contributions in high-impact journals including Journal of Biological Chemistry, PLoS Genetics, Cancer Research, and Clinical Cancer Research. His work demonstrates an evolving research trajectory from basic transcription factor biochemistry to translational cancer research with therapeutic implications. American Cancer Society postdoctoral fellowship Dr. Hollenhorst's lab maintains active research programs investigating transcription factor function in cancer, with recent publications demonstrating ongoing productivity and scientific impact. His work bridges fundamental molecular mechanisms with potential clinical applications, particularly in identifying therapeutic vulnerabilities in cancers driven by aberrant transcription factors. The Hollenhorst Lab operates within the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Pharmacology at Indiana University School of Medicine - Bloomington, with research supported by competitive grants. The lab maintains a website at http://hollenhorstlab-iu.strikingly.com/ where additional information about current projects and publications can be found.
